What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

It’s a renewable heating system that extracts heat from the outside air and releases it into your home. Because the air is constantly being warmed by the sun’s radiation, it’s a source of energy that will never run out.

An air source heat pump can reduce the CO2 emissions of your heating system by 30-50% and will save you money as it requires less power than a conventional heating system.

You will even receive up to £10,000 from the government's RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) subsidy scheme to pay for the investment.

How it works

The heat pump consists of an extractor unit that sits outside the property, with a fan that draws the air in.

The air passes over a heat exchanger where the heat from the air is absorbed.

The heat then goes through a compressor where it is amplified, before being transferred into your hot water cylinder, and distributed through your existing system.

Costs and Savings

An air source heat pump typically costs between £7,000 and £12,000 - however this is fully dependent on a number of factors and a survey of your property would be required to provide a full costing.

The Governments Renewable Heat Incentive has been introduced to incentivise customers to invest in renewable technologies such as Heat pumps.

As an example, over the 7 years after installing a heat pump, a typical 5 bedroom house will save £2,100* in energy bills, and receive £7,200** in government subsidies, giving total savings of £9,300.

*Typical savings for a 5 bedroom house switching from oil fired heating
**Typical amount received in RHI payments, for installing renewable heating in a 5 bedroom house.
